DIRECTORATE OF TELECOMMUNICATIONS
RECRUITMENT - 1957

Introduction
Recruitment within the Directorate was carried out at local and national level according to the requirements of the day. In December 1957 the Civil Service Commission published one such trawl on behalf of the Directorate seeking applications for 55 posts of Wireless Technician. I suspect this was a sizeable trawl for it’s day and not dissimilar to the national trawl that took place in early 1970, which saw myself and many of my former colleagues join the organisation at that time.

Unfortunately, the six page document in this galley is a scan of a low grade photocopy of the original document, hence the poor quality. However, it does give an insight to the recruitment requirements at the time, including the need for technical staff to climb 120-360 foot masts. This was later dropped as Aerial Rigging Teams were separately recruited for this demanding task.
